PFAS cleanup idea for Dane County airport advances despite criticism

Dane County is forging ahead with a plan to clean up toxic “forever chemicals” at the county airport, expanding the use of a novel technology that some fear won’t adequately address the pollution.
The Dane County Board has voted to approve a $1.5 million contract to remediate PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, at a key part of Dane County Regional Airport.

“This is a new technology still that we’re very lucky (to have) — we’re kind of leading the country on this issue in addressing this in what we consider a better way,” Airport Director Kimberly Jones said at a County Board meeting Thursday.
Others say the lack of any long-term study raises questions about the new approach. Critics question the airport’s data and worry the state government might object to the idea, which could leave the county back at square one.
